In Save the last dance for me, Alessandro Sciarroni rescues from oblivion the polka chinata, a popular, almost acrobatic dance that originated in Bologna in the early 20th century. When the Italian artist discovered it in 2018, this seductive dance, originally performed by two men, was on the verge of extinction and was only known to a handful of people. This included Giancarlo Stagni, a dancing master who, every Monday for six months, shared the secrets of the polka chinata with this show’s two performers, Gianmaria Borzillo and Giovanfrancesco Giannini.
In this physical duet of spinning and embracing, set to the beat of an original techno score, Alessandro Sciarroni questions memory and transmission, and from an almost forgotten past creates an incredibly contemporary piece. “Something that belongs to the past actually belongs to the present,” he says. And it also belongs to all those who, like you this Sunday, will remember it.
