After her performance in Funambule In-situ, Belgian Johanne Humblet, trained at Académie Fratellini, certainly doesn’t see any limits to the spaces of freedom and artistic creation that her art form offers. In 24h sur le fil, she talked with the audience, took naps, played and ate. In Reste, she invented other aerial performances suspended for hours high above the audience. Balancing on the high wire, in this latest adventure, she ventures onto a mobile wire, a new apparatus that ties in the work of tightrope and high-wire walking, two disciplines that use different techniques and balancing skills.
“In the writing, I want the wire to be able to break, to suddenly slacken, to unhook,” she explains. “In any case, the idea is for it to be mobile and to give it a real role in expressing the feeling of resistance.”
With the creation of Résiste, a piece that includes a singer and fully involved stage manager, the new apparatus becomes an actor and the centrepiece of the show. Whether upright, hanging, tucked or sideways on the high unstable wire, Johanne Humblet gives substance to this absurd struggle, this cry of freedom, this yearning towards the unknown. There’s just one rule: anything can happen!
BIOGRAPHY
Les filles du renard pâle
Created in Châlons by two long-time friends who met during their professional training at Académie Fratellini (Paris), Les filles du Renard Pâle company now produces the artistic projects of tightrope walker and high-wire artist, Johanne Humblet. These days, Virginie Fremaux focuses on graphic design and remains the company’s graphic designer. Creating different forms of tightrope walking performances for public space (24h sur le fil, Reste !, Funambule in-situ), Johanne Humblet focuses her work on finding and surpassing one’s limits, with a desire to share her art, meet others and share ideas. With the creation of Résiste in 2019, then Respire in 2020 she has pursued her artistic approach by building a new apparatus, specially designed for the company, which gives mobility to the high-wire. Her three-part series will end with Révolte, while other productions continue to tour in festivals.
