Romain Dubois is a Brest-based musician, composer and sound engineer who worked on Cédric Brandilly’s Architectural Sonar Works, presented at Les Tombées de la Nuit in Rennes in 2016. He has also developed a series of compositions (Piano Solo) and experimental electroacoustic creations (Piano Labo) for prepared piano in which he experiments with styles, harmonies, acoustic and electronic twists to create a mix of classical and contemporary music, Erik Satie’s signature sounds, the repetitive figures of Steve Reich and the inventions of Nils Frahm. Piano Zolo is a new form of solo and electronic piano, with a collection of his live compositions which will be played against the calming backdrop of the Conservatoire chapel.
Romain Dubois is a musician, composer, sound engineer, sound designer and creator of musical imagery. He works with a number of contemporary dance companies (Tango Sumo, Moral Soul, Toufik Oi, Pied en sol, Herwann Asseh) and groups (Fleuves, Auden), alongside soundtrack projects for advertising, film and radio. When he is not roaming the planet with creations for Cédric Brandilly’s Architectural Sonar Works (at the festival again this year with From Above! Aerial Jukebox), he plays solo piano with compositions and alternative creations that blend prepared piano and electroacoustic sounds.
Piano Zolo was created last year and includes the works of Piano Solo and Piano Labo in a configuration designed especially for the stage. Romain Dubois blends styles, with highbrow music and popular melodies, classical, jazz, pop and contemporary music. His melodies, free prepared piano figures and electronic sounds are reminiscent of Erik Satie, Steve Reich, Nils Frahm and Volker Bertelmann. Romain Dubois’s subtle compositions and experimental percussion are free and ambitious, varying between minimalist or orchestral, warm or impulsive, bold or serene, and will be presented in a choice location at the Conservatoire chapel.
BIOGRAPHY
Romain Dubois began jazz piano in 1995, with musical experiments, compositions and sound engineering research. After studying Image and Sound at the University of Western Brittany in Brest, he joined the Kreizh Breizh Akademi, while continuing to work as a sound engineer and musician with bands Kentan, Auden et Fleuves. In 2013, he joined Cédric Brandilly in his Architectural Sonar Works project and began composing for contemporary dance companies (Tango Sumo, Moral Soul, Toufik Oi, Pied en sol, Herwann Asseh), advertising and film. At the same time, he also began working on Piano Solo (with a first seven-track EP) and Piano Labo, a rhythmical piece for prepared piano with electronic sounds. His penchant for a number of formats and musical styles gives him incredible melodic freedom to embark on harmonic and rhythmic adventures of any kind.
