Since 2017, Dutch photographer and filmmaker Teun Vonk has been observing the impact of the environment on the minds and bodies of his peers, using this as the basis for his visual work. Physical Mind is an immersive installation designed during a residency at Chronus Art Center in Shanghai, where spectators can experience different kinds of physical stimulation to relieve physical or psychological stress.
Physical Mind is a structure formed of two inflatable lit-up objects that audience members lie on. Once lying down, participants rise slowly above the ground as the installation inflates, and are then gently squeezed between its curves. At first, being lifted up creates an impression of instability, but the stress is soon counterbalanced by a feeling of security.
By applying physical pressure to the body and exposing participants to soft light, Teun Vonk’s installation explores the relationships between the physical and mental states. It is an original way of bringing together artistic and scientific principles to create a unique physical and mental experience.
Installation visible from Friday, October 5 to Sunday, October 14 as part of the Maintenant festival.
