Will Guthrie is an Australian drummer and percussionist based in France, combining drums, percussion and electronics in a melodic, harmonic and rhythmic exploration. In 2019, he formed the Nist-Nah Ensemble around the gamelan, an Indonesian instrumental ensemble that combines instruments, orchestra and collective practice. Bringing together eight musicians from different backgrounds, Nist-Nah’s sophisticated yet elementary music is rich in experience and expertise, while avoiding any dubious exoticism. Rooted in Guthrie’s travels to Indonesia and his appreciation of various forms of gamelan music, Nist-Nah works on the variation of dynamics, reminiscent of musique concrète, with delirious repetition and the whirling of trance music.
