When Moondog created his last album, Elpmas (“Sample” spelled backwards) in 1991, he believed that only a computer would be capable of recreating his complex and interlacing sounds. The concept album used the woody tones of marimbas and recordings of natural sounds from the environment in a computer-generated ode to nature and the cosmos that had only ever existed in studio version.
Ensemble 0 gives a new acoustic take on the album, combining its real instruments with the original electronic sounds in a classical reinterpretation. The voices of today mix with the ghosts of the past (using some of the original instrumental materials) to revive music that draws from the canons of Johann Sebastian Bach, Native American pow-wows and electronic music.
