The venture of these Three Musketeers was launched in 2012 by this band of young actors and directors, trained at the Conservatoire National d’Art Dramatique in Paris and working at the Studio-Théâtre d’Asnières-sur-Seine. Ten years later, with six seasons available, meaning six shows lasting between one and a half hours and two hours and forty minutes, this fascinating outdoor and off-stage work has come full circle. It proves that you can produce a soap opera on a theatre stage and perform a literary blockbuster in episodes by combining the conventions of television series, pop culture and live performance and unabashedly mixing aesthetics, forms and periods to convey the full intensity of Alexandre Dumas’ fictional symphony of work.
By plunging Athos, Portos, Aramis and d’Artagnan into this impetuous staging, full of energy, unbridled inventions and cheeky humour, Collectif 49 701 practises the subtle art of the makeover and putting things into modern political perspective. These odd heroes, often acting on the borderline of legality, sketch out a series of acts of rebellion that tell the story of our times. This long story places the spectator at the heart of an immersive setting outside the theatre. The talent, joy and communicative energy of this merry bunch revive one of the first pleasures of live performance, which is to immerse yourself in the emotions, twists and turns of a story, for an explosive theatre marathon.
BIOGRAPHY
> COLLECTIF 49 701 (France)
They met in the halls of Studio-théâtre d’Asnières-sur-Seine and all ended up going to the Conservatoire National d’Art Dramatique in Paris (CNSAD). They are first and foremost actors, but also writers and directors (for Clara Hédouin and Jade Hublot, who also founded the Birgit Ensemble with Julie Bertin, a company that also includes the actress Éléonore Arnaud from Collectif 49 701). They were all brought together in 2012 by one book, Alexandre Dumas’ The Three Musketeers, a classic in historical adventure literature and a blockbuster 19th century soap opera, to invent and produce a “soap opera on a stage”. Collectif 49 701 (named after the code that opens the door of the Studio-théâtre d’Asnières-sur-Seine, their first place of work) creates political and engaged theatre. Their collective work is like a breath of fresh air in contemporary artistic creation, and now includes eighteen episodes for a total of close to forty hours of theatre.
