DakhaBrakha combines Ukrainian folklore and theatre, transforming the stage into an “ethnic chaos” with a whole new musical style. The group, whose name means “give and take”, is made up of three women and a man associated with the Dakh Theatre in Kiev. Originally a troop of actors and musicians, they have since become self-proclaimed ambassadors for a Ukraine attached both to its roots and musical openness.
They are all about sound and heart. Starting with folk music from their own country, these Ukrainians have mixed in various influences and rhythms from around the world, including traditional costumes, ancestral polyphonic music and minimalist instrumentation drawing on African and oriental trance sounds. In recent years they have performed at a number of international festivals, adding a note of political rebellion to their soulish celebratory show.
